Looking for Fame in Your Future? Join the choir!

Try to imagine Justin Timberlake singing a hallelujah chorus instead of his famous “Can’t Stop the Feeling.” Did you know before joining The Mickey Mouse Club, Timberlake sang in his local choir?

In fact, many famous musicians, actors, and actresses got their start singing in church choirs. Some of these celebrities sang in church choirs as children, and others went on to direct church choirs themselves. Some of these choristers even went on to play on the big screen and won Oscars for their performances!

Who is the most famous person who sang in a church choir? Katy Perry tops the list. The “Roar” singer got her start singing on the risers at church. It’s not surprising–her parents are pastors. Avril Lavigne started singing in her local church choir at the encouragement of her mother. Tina Turner sang in a church choir in Canada before becoming a star. Whitney Houston sang with the choir at The New Hope Baptist Church in New Jersey. And who could forget the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin who started singing gospel music in the choir at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan?!

Several famous men also sang in church choirs. In addition to Timberlake, Andy Griffith was the choir director at First Baptist Church of Goldsboro; Kevin Costner sang in a Baptist church choir when he was a teen; and John Legend was the choir director of Bethel AME Church in Scranton, PA.

Are you surprised that so many celebs got their start singing in church choirs?  You could too!
